CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE

 CONTEMPORARY LITRATURE

In our course entitled Contemporary, Popular and Emergent Literature, we have tackled all about the Contemporary Literature. Throughout the course, I have learned that contemporary literature is written after the World War II through the current day. The content is usually the reflection of social and political viewpoint. Thus, themes are real-life situations which awaken the spirit and soul of people such as inequality, terrorism, politics, ethics and morals, globalization, race and gender and many more. The elements of contemporary literature are: real life and believable stories, realistic characters and events and reflects social, political, psychological, cultural, religious and personal issues. Clearly, it portrays the harsh and dark reality of life. Literary works are both prose and poetry. Prose are usually fiction such as novel, novellas, drama and essays. Flash fiction, stories, slam poetry, plays, memoirs and autobiographies also fall in this category. Contemporary works usually influence the public for it has the beauty and style the readers look for.  Setting usually take place in the past while characters usually mirror the world around them (e.g. loss, seeking for something, insecure, depressed etc.) As for the language, contemporary literature uses variety of language.

However, there are also issues regardinf contemporary literature. Bruce Sterling come uo wuth Eighteen Challenges in Contemporary Literature. First challenge, “Literature is language-based and national; contemporary society is globalizing and polyglot. Another challenge is that the means of book promotion, distribution and retail destabilized. Furthermore, it was said that Contemporary Literature is not confronting issues of general urgent; dominant bestsellers are in former niche genre: fantasies, romances and teen books. Now, how can we addressed these issues and challenges in contemporary literature? For me, I think there should be a balance of when and how to use posted and printed materials. This way, readers, authors and people working in publishing houses will have an equal advantage when it comes to reading and publishing contemporary book. But personally, I think there is no problem whether contemporary books are published online or as printed one. After all, readers nowadays can read books online and offline. Furthermore, I believe that printed materials will continue to exist. It has been part of our daily life and it will continue that way.
